Sony is no longer one of the major players in the smartphone space in 2023, and we hardly ever see the Xperia phones making it to our list of the best phones. The company may have exited from several markets around the world, but it still caters to various niche audiences in a few markets, including the U.S. The current crop of Xperia phones may not offer the best value for your money, but they remain standout options on the market with their terrific camera chops, sleek design, and fantastic displays. They also pack some valuable features for creators, like the Camera Pro and Cinema Pro apps, which offer a Sony Alpha-like experience on a smartphone. If you value those features and are willing to open your wallet to pick up the best Sony phones in 2023, then check out some of your options highlighted in the collection below.

With other OEMs already updating their devices to Android 13 left and right, it was high time for Sony to up its games, and that's exactly what it decided to finally do today. After seeding Android 13 to the Xperia 1 IV last month, the Japanese OEM is now bringing the latest flavor of Android to the Xperia 5 IV and the Xperia Pro-I. Additionally, 2021's Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III have also picked up the stable Android 13 update in select regions.

Google rolled out Android 13 for its Pixel devices in August this year. Since then, a few Android OEMs have released stable builds of the latest version of Android for a couple of their devices. OnePlus has rolled out OxygenOS 13 based on Android 13 for the OnePlus 10 Pro, Samsung has released stable One UI 5 for its flagship Galaxy S22 series, and Realme GT 2 Pro users have received a fresh build of Realme UI 3.0 based on Android 13. Sony is now joining the fray and has announced the Android 13 update for the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV.

Earlier this year in May, Sony unveiled its latest flagship smartphone -- the Xperia 1 IV. While the company typically launches an Xperia 5 series device alongside its latest Xperia 1 model, the Xperia 5 IV did not arrive with the Xperia 1 IV. This led many to believe Sony had pulled an Apple and dropped the compact flagship model altogether. However, that might not be the case as the company has now announced a launch event for September 1, where it will unveil a new compact smartphone.
