Net Speed Indicator is a free app to show your download/upload speeds in the status bar
Stock Android 10 doesn't let users see their download/upload speeds in the status bar. Net Speed Indicator is a free app that brings this feature.
Stock Android is generally acclaimed by users because of its clean user interface, minimalism, speed and smoothness, and simplicity. Custom user interfaces add many features on top of stock Android, but in the process of doing so, they add clutter and reduce simplicity. Equally, though, it's undeniable that stock Android is generally thought of as a bare-bones variant of the operating system. It lacks many of the features that users of custom user interfaces have come to take for granted, such as dual installation of a single app, one-handed mode, scheduled power on/off, and more. One such feature is network speed indicator. It's a common feature on custom user interfaces such as OxygenOS, MIUI, EMUI, One UI, ColorOS, FunTouch OS, and others. It's been adopted by custom ROMs such as LineageOS since a long time. However, it's still missing in stock Android 10, which means stock users are missing out. While there are many network status indicator apps on the Play Store, some are more feature-rich than others. Enter Net Speed Indicator, a new free app that brings capable functionality.
Get Status Bar Clock Tweaks for Android P [Root]
XDA Recognized Contributor has created a mod for Substratum called Statusbar Clock Tweaks for Android P that gives you back control of your status bar.
I for one have not been a fan of how Google has handled certain parts of Android P. They could have done the navigation gestures much better, and I feel they could have handled the placement of icons and information in the status bar better for notched displays. It may take time to get used to things like the time being on the left side of the status bar, but a new mod means you can move it back. XDA Recognized Contributor/Themer AL_IRAQI has created a mod for Substratum called Statusbar Clock Tweaks for P that gives you back control of your status bar.
Customize the Status Bar on Xiaomi Phones Running MIUI with MIUI Status Bar Pro [Root]
MIUI Status Bar Pro, a third-party app, allows users to customize the status bar on Xiaomi phones running MIUI (as well as non-Xiaomi phones running MIUI). It has 10 different styles for the status bar, and it requires root.
With the exception of the Xiaomi Mi A1, all Xiaomi phones run the smartphone maker's in-house MIUI Android skin. It was released in 2010, and it's gone on to become not only a differentiating feature for Xiaomi devices, but one of the most popular custom UIs on Android.
Paranoid Android (also referred to as PA and AOSPA) received a pretty substantial update yesterday to version 7.2.0. The new builds of the ROM come outfitted with performance enhancements, improvements to the Color Engine, a brand-new Accidental Touch (prevention) feature, and plenty more.
Add a Brightness Slider to your Status Bar with the "Display Brightness" App
Add a Brightness Slider to the Status Bar of any Android phone with the "Display Brightness" application available on the Amazon App Store.
There are millions of applications available in the Google Play Store, so finding new and interesting applications can be an overwhelming task. Adding on to that fact, we also have to consider that many useful applications are not available through the Google Play Store. There's also our own XDA Apps & Games forum, XDA Labs, F-Droid, and Amazon's App Store. Within the Amazon App Store is an old, but still useful application called Display brightness which brings one of the more popular custom ROM features to any Android device - a brightness slider that gives you the ability to control the brightness by sliding your finger left/right on the status bar.
Android O is Breaking Apps that Overlay on top of the Status Bar
Android O deprecates TYPE_SYSTEM_OVERLAY in favor of TYPE_APPLICATION_OVERLAY, resulting in apps that overlay on top of the status bar breaking.
The trickle of posts outlining new user-facing features found in Android O is starting to slow down now that users have had weeks to test the software on their device. However, there are many, many changes made under-the-hood that are slowly being uncovered. We posted about one such change just the other day about Nexus and Pixel devices running Android O adopting SDCardFS. But today, we would like to discuss a change that will affect developers of certain apps, particularly those that overlay on top of the status bar. These applications seem to be broken in the Android O Developer Preview, which at first glance you might dismiss as a simple bug, but diving deeper into the reference documentation, this may be an intended change by Google.
