SunShine is a popular tool used primarily on HTC devices for enabling S-OFF. The tool was updated to support the HTC U11 earlier this year, and now it supports the HTC U12+. Without being able to S-OFF, modding HTC devices becomes a great difficulty. This release should open the door to the true modding capability of the device.
SunShine Now Supports Android Oreo on the HTC U11
The HTC U11 was upgraded to Android Oreo recently, breaking a vulnerability used by S-OFF tool SunShine. It's since been updated to support it.
Modding HTC devices can be a pain -- they use what's called an "S-ON/S-OFF" system. It was previously possible to mod the HTC U11 with S-OFF using the SunShine tool on Android Nougat, but with the update to Android Oreo, the functionality broke. Now, SunShine's been updated to support Android Oreo on the HTC U11.
Firewater Devs Show the HTC U11 S-OFF has been Achieved
HTC U11 S-OFF has been achieved by XDA Senior Recognized Developer beaups as shown in a new photo that was uploaded to Twitter.
HTC devices have a unique security layer built into their phones that is labeled either S-ON or S-OFF. When an HTC device is flagged as S-ON, various properties are protected from being permanently modified. This is why many enthusiasts opt for S-OFF, so they can get rid of all restrictions and modify protected partitions with zips not signed by HTC, which allows them to flash radios and custom hboots, and convert their device to a different (more updated!) edition of the same phone. The developers over at Firewater have just shown S-OFF has been achieved on the new HTC U11.
Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL Bootloader Unlock has been Released
The SunShine developers have just released the bootloader unlocking tool for the Verizon/EE Pixel and Pixel XL: dePixel8.
When Google revealed they had struck a carrier exclusivity deal with Verizon for sales of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL within the United States, many of us feared the worst. Given Verizon's history of preventing bootloader unlocking, enthusiasts feared that even the standard bearer for Android, Google's first truly in-house flagship smartphone, would be subject to Verizon's draconian security measures. And indeed, that did appear to be the case. But cracking the Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL's bootloader seemed to be a matter of when, not if, and just the other day XDA Senior Recognized Developers beaups and jcase announced that they had figured out a way to unlock the bootloader. Furthermore, the two SunShine developers disclosed to XDA that their unlock method would be released for free which is something the two developers were under no obligation to do, but decided to do so for the benefit of the community.
