At CES 2024 this week, I've been looking at a lot of what's going to be the future of computers. Every year, we see iterative improvements over previous models, but this year, we're seeing computing head into a new era. One thing that we're seeing the beginnings of is Thunderbolt 5, and Razer was the first to show it off on a device.

Intel has clarified that while some 14th-generation processors will support Thunderbolt 5, that doesn't include the desktop variants.

Intel recently launched its 14th-generation Core processors for desktops, also known as Raptor Lake Refresh. These are very similar to the previous generation, but Intel initially stated that they would support Thunderbolt 5. Now, the company has clarified that while Thunderbolt 5 will be supported on some 14th-generation Intel Core processors, that doesn't include the desktop models launched this week.

Intel has been teasing Thunderbolt 5 for nearly a year now, but today, the company has finally fully unveiled the technology. Thunderbolt 5 will deliver up to a 120Gbps bandwidth, three times more than Thunderbolt 4, with support for more and faster displays as well as more powerful charging capabilities, all using a single cable.

While Thunderbolt 4 launched last year with Intel's 11th-generation processors, it's no surprise that Thunderbolt 5 is being worked on. What's more surprising is that Intel Client Computing Group EVP and GM Gregory Bryant accidentally teased it on Twitter. On a trip to Intel's research and development labs in Israel, he posted a tweet with four pictures, one of which shares some details about Thunderbolt 5, as spotted by AnandTech.
