Microsoft has announced that it's now possible to run Linux distributions based on WSL2 in Windows Server 2022. The change was rolled out with the latest cumulative, which brought the OS to build number 20348.740, though the change wasn't mentioned in the official changelog. Microsoft's Craig Loewen confirmed that support for WSL2 was added in a GitHub comment, which came in response to ongoing concerns about the lack of support for it in Windows Server 2022.

Microsoft is rolling out an out-of-band update for various supported versions of Windows, addressing a variety of newly-introduced issues with last week's Patch Tuesday. Among the problems fixed with this update, Windows users were reporting that they were unable to connect to VPN devices, use Hyper-V, or use ReFS drives, among other problems. On the Windows release health dashboard, Microsoft has acknowledged all of these problems following the Patch Tuesday updates released last week.

Typically, Windows Server releases are somewhat aligned with consumer versions of Windows, but Windows Server 2022 is still more like Windows 10 than Windows 11. That's probably because the use cases for Windows Server don't really require the kind of UI refresh that Windows 11 is.
