In this world of constant leaks, Xiaomi's Indian launch event for the Redmi Note 7 caught us slightly off-guard. Leaks and information building up to the event indicated that Xiaomi would be launching two devices in India, but one of these devices would be sporting a 12MP dual rear camera setup instead of the 48MP rear camera as was seen on the Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. This led us to believe that Xiaomi would be launching the Chinese Redmi Note 7 as the Redmi Note 7 Pro for India, since the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro with the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor had not launched in China yet. By deferring the Chinese launch of the Pro variant and prioritizing India as the stage for the global launch of the device, Xiaomi sent out a clear message to its competition: Xiaomi really means business in India.

While the specifications and design of the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 left little to the imagination ahead of the device's official launch, Poco still had a few tricks up their sleeves. At its core, the specifications aren't too different from the other Xiaomi flagships here: It has a display notch, it's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip with 6 or 8GBs of RAM, has a dual rear 12+5MP camera and 20MP selfie camera, and it runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9. But the Poco F1 manages to make its mark with its affordability: Even at a base price of Rs 20,999, the phone makes few compromises. It has an infrared sensor for face unlock, "LiquidCool" technology for sustained performance under load, a 4,000mAh battery, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone is knocking on the door of the OnePlus 6 and the Asus ZenFone 5Z given its price point in India. But Poco is also making a few interesting concessions that should draw the attention of smartphone enthusiasts—namely, that they want to support the custom developer community.

We've been hearing rumours about a new Xiaomi smartphone dubbed the "Pocophone F1" for a while now. This new Xiaomi flagship smartphone would have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and a notched LCD. While rumors don't always paint an accurate picture of a device, the Pocophone F1 was leaked in its entirety well before launch. All we had left to learn about the device was its market availability and pricing. Today, Xiaomi has announced the Xiaomi Poco F1 in India (which will be called the Pocophone F1 in other markets).
