Xiaomi finally prepares to roll out Android 9 Pie to the Mi Box 3
The Mi Box 3 (known as simply the "Mi Box" in the U.S.) has finally received a beta build of Android Pie from Xiaomi. Read on to know more!
Launched back in 2016, the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 was a forerunner of today's Mi Box 4K or the Mi TV Stick. Matter of fact, the “Mi Box” sold in the U.S. is nothing but a rebranded Mi Box 3. The Chinese OEM shipped the device with Android Marshmallow, skipped the promised Nougat update, and directly jumped to Android Oreo. While its successor, the Mi Box S, did pick up the Android Pie update a few months ago, the owners of the Mi Box 3 are stuck with Android Oreo till date. If you are still holding onto the older Mi Box, you will be excited to know that Xiaomi is now pushing out the long-anticipated Android Pie update for the Mi Box 3 to select beta testers.
Mi Box 4K Review: Reinvent your old TV with this efficient and budget-friendly Android TV box
Xiaomi's Mi Box 4K is a value-for-money and efficient gadget that'll help you reclaim your old and dying dumb TV with the power of Android TV.
Xiaomi has been selling smart TVs in India since 2018 and it should be credited for propelling the demand for affordable smart TVs as well as creating a mid-segment between sub-standard and good televisions. After launching its first batch of smart TVs running an AOSP-based interface, Xiaomi transitioned to the Android TV interface in response to the paucity of supported apps on the previous software platform. More than two years after the first launch, Xiaomi is the leading smart TV brand in India in terms of sales. But now, Xiaomi has a different notion and that's to convert every TV into a smart TV, especially keeping in mind the older ones. In line with this, Xiaomi had launched the Mi Box 4K, an Android TV set-top box that can connect to any TV or desktop monitor via HDMI and convert that it into a screen running Android TV.

[Update: Clarification] Many Android TV users are seeing sponsored posts in the launcher after the latest update
A recent update to Android TV has begun to display ads directly in the launcher. At first glance, there didn't seem to be a way to disable them.
We've seen a few OEMs insert ads into their Android devices. Most notable is Xiaomi, but even they have recently come out and said they will work on this in a future update. There are others though, including Samsung, which lets you choose whether or not you want to see ads in various areas of the OS. These can be quickly disabled thanks to a settings option, but it looks like a recent update to Android TV has begun to display ads directly in the launcher. At first glance, there didn't seem to be a way to disable them, but that has rarely stopped us enthusiasts from figuring it out.

Xiaomi Mi Box Android Oreo beta re-opened after users have tons of issues
The Xiaomi Mi Box recently received an update to Android Oreo. The OTA has since been halted and the beta re-opened as users run into tons of problems.
The Xiaomi Mi Box recently received the much-awaited update to Android Oreo, after the device was seemingly abandoned when an Android Nougat update never came. While the update worked, the number of bugs present in the final release was overwhelming. Testers felt that they weren't being heard, and key functionality was left out that meant some Xiaomi Mi Box devices were completely unusable for their initial purpose. Now the founders of xiaomi.eu have taken it up with Xiaomi, and the rollout has been canceled with the Android Oreo beta program being re-opened.
Xiaomi Mi Box 4's remote may have dedicated buttons for Google Assistant & Netflix
The Xiaomi Mi Box 4 may be coming with a microphone in the remote for using the Google Assistant, along with a dedicated button for Netflix.
According to new FCC filings discovered by Variety, Xiaomi could be releasing the Xiaomi Mi Box 4 in the coming months in the United States. The model number of the device is MDZ-22-AB and it is yet again based on Android TV. Xiaomi's history with Android TV devices has been spotty, with the company only recently rolling out Android Oreo for the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 the other day after seemingly abandoning the device. Hardware-wise, the Xiaomi Mi Box 4 will perform about the same as the Mi Box 3 (the Mi Box 4 has the Amlogic S905X-H system-on-chip according to the documents), but the main difference appears to be with the remote. The Bluetooth remote has a microphone for the Google Assistant along with a button that's strictly for launching the Netflix app.
Xiaomi Mi Box's Android Oreo update is finally rolling out
The Xiaomi Mi Box's Android Oreo update is finally rolling out, and it comes with a number of features including Google Assistant support.
According to multiple users on Reddit, the Android Oreo update for the Xiaomi Mi Box is finally rolling out. We already suspected it would be arriving soon after beta testers started to receive the update early last month and it wasn't labeled anywhere as being an actual beta release. Interestingly, the device never actually received Android Nougat despite being promised to receive it shortly after launch. There was a public beta released 11 months after its launch that you could sideload, but nothing further ever came after that. There's even better news for device owners, as the update appears to be rolling out globally. We've got some screenshots below of how it looks, but first, you can take a look at the new interface in the video below.
NVIDIA Shield TV and Xiaomi Mi Box shown running Android Oreo at MWC
The NVIDIA Shield TV and Xiaomi Mi Box were both shown running the Android Oreo update for Android TV at MWC, suggesting the update is coming soon.
At Mobile World Congress this year we saw a huge amount of Android device unveilings. We saw the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, the Asus Zenfone 5 and 5Z, and a lot of other devices as well. What we didn't see much of were announcements for improvements to existing devices. In the case of the NVIDIA Shield TV and the Xiaomi Mi Box, though, they were both shown off running the Android TV Oreo update.
Remember the Xiaomi Mi Box? The Android TV box that was announced back during Google I/O 2016? The box that was supposed to launch with Android Nougat, or at least receive an update to Nougat shortly after launch?
