One of the best things about Android is that if you don’t like the pre-installed software on your phone, you can always flash a custom ROM to spice things up. While LineageOS is the most popular option, there are plenty of amazing custom ROMs out there. One of them is Paranoid Android which was updated to Android 12 in November last year. Since then the Paranoid Android team has released Android 12-based Sapphire Alpha builds to a number of popular smartphones, including the OnePlus 7 Pro, POCO X3, Mi 10T, and more. And the team isn’t stopping there as it’s now bringing Android 12 to a few more phones.

The Team Win Recovery Project, AKA TWRP, needs no introduction to the Android modding community. Over the last few years, TWRP has become the de-facto standard for custom recovery in the Android ecosystem. One of the reasons why TWRP is so popular compared to other custom recovery solutions is the massive number of Android devices the project supports, with new devices being added to the official roster on a regular basis. Since our last coverage, the developer team has officially added support for the Samsung Galaxy M30, Galaxy A40, Huawei P20 Lite, and the Moto G5S Plus.

The custom ROM is known for its style and customizability, while its foundation is based on bits and pieces from LineageOS, Pixel Experience, and OmniROM. The developers started rebasing the project on top of Android 10 a few months ago, and they are now confident enough to remove the beta tag. The Resurrection Remix team has recently announced its first set of stable builds based on Android 10 for a bunch of devices, including several Xiaomi smartphones and a few others from ASUS, OnePlus, Samsung, and other OEMs.

Android is all about customization, and the aftermarket development community is the driving force behind that liberty. The developers often come up with creative ideas to re-use an existing design component in a completely different way than the one it is intended for. Take the example of Energy Notch by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2 - a cool app that puts the display-notch of the OnePlus 6T to use by turning the space around the notch into an animated battery indicator.

Back in August 2018, Xiaomi kicked off POCO as an independent sub-brand and it had a tremendous start with the launch of the POCO F1 — a budget-friendly device with flagship specifications. However, since then, the company hasn't launched another device. Over the last year, fans of the POCO F1 wondered when the brand would launch its successor and we even got to see a number of leaks here and there, suggesting that the brand was prepping up to launch another banger of a device. But sadly, we haven't seen any official information from the company regarding this elusive device over the last year. This led people to believe that the brand was essentially dead.

Xiaomi started off POCO as a sub-brand back in August 2018, with Xiaomi's then Lead Product Manager Mr. Jai Mani at the helm of the brand. POCO had a very successful start with the POCO F1, which was launched in the same month in India as well as internationally. POCO's beginnings echoed that of OnePlus, and the POCO F1 brought on board some of the same qualities that people had loved on the OnePlus One. Now, as was done with the Redmi brand, Xiaomi has announced that POCO will now operate as its own independent brand.

Officially, stable Android 10 is available on Google Pixel devices, the Essential Phone, and the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro, while beta builds can be found for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, and Samsung had been spotted testing the update with OneUI 2.0 for the Snapdragon and Exynos Samsung Galaxy S10 and Exynos Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Source code for the new release is already up and available at AOSP, which brought to us the first Android 10 custom ROM, that too on the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 with practically no bugs. Now, more Android 10 custom ROMs have begun sprouting up for devices like the Xiaomi POCO F1, the Xiaomi Mi 6, the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

The reaction to the Redmi K20's price shows there's still a place for a POCO F2

The Xiaomi Redmi K20 stirred a controversy with its "high" pricing. Is the K20 series the perfect replacement for the Poco F2, or is it too pricy?

In the middle of 2018, information first surfaced about Xiaomi working on a new flagship smartphone featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. What made this information interesting was the fact that Xiaomi intended this phone to be launched in India under a new sub-brand called "POCO". At that stage, Xiaomi's flagship Mi series had failed to capture the hearts of the Indian audience, so Xiaomi's decision to grant a "flagship" product to a new sub-brand was rather brave and ambitious. The POCO team had an uphill task ahead of them, as they had to compete in a price bracket where Xiaomi phones had not managed to break into, especially in regions like India. And with the launch of the POCO F1, they set out to make smartphone history. Now, Xiaomi is back with the Redmi K20 series, but is the magic still there?

The Redmi Note 5 (Note 5 Pro in India) already has it in the stable build while a lot of other supported devices including the Mi 8 got the feature with MIUI global beta ROM back in May. The POCO F1, perhaps the most captivating budget flagship made by Xiaomi in the recent times, is also about to get the dark mode alongside the Redmi Note 7 Pro in the upcoming update - if not with MIUI 10, then surely with MIUI 11.

Xiaomi recently announced that it will be shutting its Global Beta ROMs for all devices, with effect from July 1, 2019. Public beta ROMs, though are presumed to be Beta in nature, have been stable enough for a lot of users to use it as a daily driver mainly because of the rather frequent nature of updates. This came with the drawback that a lot of these users would not provide feedback to Xiaomi through the relevant channels, defeating some of the purposes of the program and living with a not-so-stable MIUI experience. Now, Xiaomi is looking for a closed group of beta testers who wish to try out the upcoming Android Q update to the Poco F1, as well as Android Pie updates to the Xiaomi Mi 6, Xiaomi Redmi 6 and Xiaomi Redmi 6A.

Xiaomi's MIUI is something of a mixed bag. For users outside of China, it doesn't always offer the most appealing UX, but MIUI has undoubtedly come a long way since its inception. MIUI Product Director Liu Ming and Design Director Ge Rui held an AMA session about MIUI 11 back in March, in which we learned about the latest and greatest OS from Xiaomi. Features such as ultra power saving mode, automatic screenshot management, and a system-wide dark theme were discussed as part of the AMA.
