Since Android is built on top of the Linux kernel, Android device makers have to provide, upon customer request, the source code for any Linux kernel binaries that ship on their devices. That includes not only the release date software, but also any subsequent updates to the kernel. The availability of such sources allow the modding community to add new capabilities that are otherwise not offered in the stock configuration. Kernel source releases also help developers to port popular custom ROMs (e.g. LineageOS) for the device which, in turn, benefit users who aren’t satisfied with the stock ROM. OEMs like Xiaomi and Motorola maintain a steady track record of releasing these sources and we now have another example of their commitment towards the aftermarket developer community.

Google Play Services for AR (formerly Google ARCore) is a software service from the company that enables applications to create augmented reality experienced on devices without any need for dedicated hardware. While the service uses a device's existing cameras and sensors for the AR experience, Google has to work with OEMs to create custom calibration profiles for each device in order to ensure that the AR features work properly. Due to the fact that several new Android devices are released each month, Google regularly adds new smartphones to the list of supported devices. Since our last coverage earlier this year in April, 21 new devices have gained official support for the service.

The series consists of three devices — the Redmi 10X 5G, Redmi 10X Pro, and Redmi 10X 4G — with the latter being a rebranded Redmi Note 9 which was launched earlier this year. Rebranding is undoubtedly an effective method to cater to a large number of consumers with minimum effort. Xiaomi, for example, was able to take advantage of the hype around the "POCO" tag by presenting the 4G variant of the Redmi K30 as the POCO X2 in India. Interestingly, the 5G-capable Redmi K30 has remained exclusive to China so far. While we don't have any knowledge of a potential global launch of the Redmi K30 5G, we now have evidence that Xiaomi may launch a cheaper version of the device called the "Redmi K30i".

There are a handful of established players in the smartphone market; and thanks to how releases have worked out in the past, we have now fallen into a predictable pattern of releases. Every year few months, these established players release another iteration in their successful product lines, cashing in rightfully on the hard-earned goodwill from those lines. So when we hear about Xiaomi working on the Redmi Note 9, we aren't really surprised. But when we hear about Xiaomi working on a Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition and Redmi 10X, we do take notice.

[Update: Snapdragon 865 confirmed] Redmi K30 Pro is the next flagship smartphone from the Xiaomi spin-off brand

Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi has released the first teaser image for the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro, revealing some aspects of its design.

Last year's Redmi K20 Pro was inarguably one of the best 'flagship killers' from the company. The device offered top-of-the-line hardware at a very affordable price point, making it one of the most popular handsets in emerging markets like India. Back in December last year, Xiaomi's spin-off brand Redmi launched a follow up to the device — the Redmi K30 — in China, however, the device featured mid-range specifications which meant that it wasn't a true successor to the flagship killer from last year. Earlier this month we learned that the company was planning to launch a more appropriate successor to the Redmi K20 Pro (review), featuring Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 865 chip. Now, the company has officially released the first teaser image for the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro.

Late last year in December, Xiaomi launched the Redmi K30 and Redmi K30 5G in China. While the company hasn't launched the devices internationally yet, its former sub-brand POCO launched the Redmi K30 as the POCO X2 earlier this month in India. In a bid to promote third-party development for the device, POCO also released its kernel source code at the launch event. POCO's dev-friendly nature and its willingness to support the modding community is one of the main reasons behind the brand's popularity. Now, it seems like Xiaomi is following in its footsteps and has released the kernel sources for the Redmi K30 5G, even before its launch in international markets.

After a year and half long waiting period, POCO finally expanded its portfolio with the launch of POCO X2 in India. While not a direct successor to the POCO F1, the POCO X2 is filled with all the right ingredients necessary to make its own name. With a smooth 120Hz display, a bigger battery, improved cameras, and even cheaper starting price, the device should face no issue convincing potential buyers. However, it’s not just the low price point that makes POCO so popular among enthusiasts. The part of the appeal also comes from the company's dev-friendly nature and willingness to support the modding community.

MWC 2020 is fast approaching, and multiple device makers are scheduled to launch new phones at the event. We expect to see both launches of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865-powered flagships as well as mid-range phones powered by the Snapdragon 765G. Although Xiaomi hasn't specifically stated that it plans to announce new phones at MWC, it did previously confirm that the Xiaomi Mi 10 is scheduled to launch in Q1 2020. The Mi 10 will be accompanied by the Mi 10 Pro, which will have 66W fast charging. These two phones are code-named "umi" and "cmi" respectively. The "umi" and "cmi" are expected to feature 108MP primary cameras, because we saw evidence related to the same back in September. Now, we have seen evidence of another Snapdragon 865-powered Xiaomi device, and it's possible that it won't feature a 108MP camera.

Back in December last year, Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi launched the Redmi K30 and K30 5G in China. Out of the two devices, the higher-end Redmi K30 5G featured a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC, coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Building up on the design of its predecessor, the Redmi K30 5G featured a 6.67-inch FHD+ 120Hz refresh rate display with a dual-punch hole cutout for the front-facing cameras, a quad rear camera setup with Sony's latest 64MP IMX 686 as the primary sensor, and a 4,500mAh battery. The device was released in four color variants at a starting price of CNY 1999 (~$284), making it one of the most affordable 5G devices in the market at the time. While Xiaomi is yet to release the Redmi K30 internationally, we've now opened up our forums for the device for discussions and development once it's launched.

Back in August 2018, Xiaomi kicked off POCO as an independent sub-brand and it had a tremendous start with the launch of the POCO F1 — a budget-friendly device with flagship specifications. However, since then, the company hasn't launched another device. Over the last year, fans of the POCO F1 wondered when the brand would launch its successor and we even got to see a number of leaks here and there, suggesting that the brand was prepping up to launch another banger of a device. But sadly, we haven't seen any official information from the company regarding this elusive device over the last year. This led people to believe that the brand was essentially dead.

Xiaomi's sub-brand Redmi entered the affordable flagship game with the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro, launched in China in May 2019. Both the devices featured an identical design, and the main point of difference between the two was the SoC in use. The Redmi K20 Pro was the true flagship killer, featuring the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC; while the Redmi K20 balanced performance with affordability by opting for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC. Half a year later, Xiaomi is looking once again to balance affordability with performance with the new Redmi K30 that has now been launched in China.

Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand is known in the market for its affordable yet high value-for-money lineups, namely the Redmi series, the Redmi A series and the Redmi Note series. This year, the company ventured into flagship territory with this branding, aiming to provide a flagship experience at an affordable price with devices like the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro, or the Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro as they are known in Europe. Xiaomi is busy launching other devices like the Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A in India, and soon, the Redmi Note 8 Pro too. Xiaomi's Redmi sub-brand attempted its first foray into the flagship market with the Redmi K20 Pro, a device that was widely praised for being an affordable flagship at a time when several other OEMs strayed further away from affordability. The K20 series was launched in May 2019 in China, but Redmi had revealed in October 2019 that it was already working on the successor to the series. The Redmi K30 was confirmed to be Redmi's first 5G smartphone, and the official teaser accompanying this announcement confirmed that it will come with dual punch-hole front cameras. Now, we are finally seeing the first live images of the Redmi K30, which go on to confirm that the next Redmi flagship will indeed have a 120Hz high refresh rate display.
