LineageOS remains the most popular custom ROM out there. It's backed by a strong and active community that’s always striving to make the newest version of Andriod accessible to more users. Earlier in March, the team at LineageOS released LineageOS 18.1, the latest release based on Android 11. At the launch time, LineageOS 18.1 was made available to nearly sixty Android devices. But this list has continued to grow in size over the past weeks. Last month we saw the official builds of LineageOS 18.1 going live for the Galaxy Note 3, Mi A2, LG 3, Galaxy S5, OnePlus 6/6T, and more. The OnePlus 7T and Google’s Pixel 3 series joined the list shortly after. Now ten more phones have just been added to the official LineageOS 18.1 build roster.

Since Android is built on top of the Linux kernel, Android device makers have to provide, upon customer request, the source code for any Linux kernel binaries that ship on their devices. That includes not only the release date software, but also any subsequent updates to the kernel. The availability of such sources allow the modding community to add new capabilities that are otherwise not offered in the stock configuration. Kernel source releases also help developers to port popular custom ROMs (e.g. LineageOS) for the device which, in turn, benefit users who aren’t satisfied with the stock ROM. OEMs like Xiaomi and Motorola maintain a steady track record of releasing these sources and we now have another example of their commitment towards the aftermarket developer community.

Although the Redmi Note 7/7S users in other regions, including Europe and Russia, have already received their MIUI 12 update, the Indian units were still waiting for their turn. That changes today, however, as the company has finally started rolling out the stable MIUI 12 update to these devices in India.

Since then, the team has added support for a couple of Sony and ASUS devices and revealed that they were shutting down the Android Oreo-based "Noct" branch. Now, the CarbonROM developers are back with a new release yet again, which brings support for a handful of OnePlus smartphones and brings even more improvements to the table.

The custom ROM is known for its style and customizability, while its foundation is based on bits and pieces from LineageOS, Pixel Experience, and OmniROM. The developers started rebasing the project on top of Android 10 a few months ago, and they are now confident enough to remove the beta tag. The Resurrection Remix team has recently announced its first set of stable builds based on Android 10 for a bunch of devices, including several Xiaomi smartphones and a few others from ASUS, OnePlus, Samsung, and other OEMs.

Launched back in 2019, Xiaomi's Redmi Note 7 brought 48MP camera to the masses. The company decided to use a different camera sensor on the Indian variant, but they quickly phased out the initial model in favor of the Redmi Note 7S with a 48 MP primary rear camera. There is virtually no difference between the regular Redmi Note 7 and the Note 7S except the camera. Both models share a common code-name ("lavender"), thus their firmware packages are identical as well.

Android is all about customization, and the aftermarket development community is the driving force behind that liberty. The developers often come up with creative ideas to re-use an existing design component in a completely different way than the one it is intended for. Take the example of Energy Notch by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2 - a cool app that puts the display-notch of the OnePlus 6T to use by turning the space around the notch into an animated battery indicator.

LineageOS is the most popular AOSP-based custom ROM out there. Its origin can be traced back to CyanogenMod, which was itself not only the most well-known custom ROM many years ago but also the reason the OnePlus One was so well-received by the community. Over the years, the team behind LineageOS has kept the project updated with new versions of Android for dozens of Android devices. The latest version, LineageOS 17.1, is based on Android 10 and supports a long list of devices. Now, the custom ROM team has added official support for their latest release for a lot of devices from OnePlus, Samsung, Xiaomi, and more. Newly added devices include the Essential Phone, Moto X (2014), Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016), Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, and more.

There was a time when you could slap any operating system on the mythical HTC HD2, be it Android, Ubuntu, or even Windows RT. The Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II are gradually taking up that mantle, as it is possible to install regular GNU/Linux distributions on them with very little effort. While you can satisfy the urge of having a "true Linux phone" by getting the Librem 5 or PinePhone, their hardware configurations are unfortunately dated. Several community-driven projects, such as UBports and postmarketOS, are trying to bridge the gap between regular consumer Android devices and mainstream Linux distributions, and Project Halium plays a huge role in this development scene. Now, XDA Recognized Developer erfanoabdi has decided to dip his toe in this particular domain, as he has ported Ubuntu Touch to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7.

Earlier this year in January, a report from market intelligence firm IDC revealed that Xiaomi and Samsung saw significant growth in market share in India, backed by devices in the Redmi Note and Galaxy A series. At the time, a Xiaomi spokesperson had revealed that the company had managed to sell over one million Redmi Note 8 series devices within a month of its launch in the country. Later that month, a different report from Counterpoint Research revealed that the Indian market itself saw an overall growth of 7% YoY thanks to the expansion of Chinese brands and their aggressive pricing strategies. If you've been keeping a close eye on the smartphone market in general, you'd know that India is the fastest-growing smartphone market worldwide and this has had a significant effect on the global sales figures of brands operating in the country, especially Xiaomi.

Xiaomi is known to offer great products at a high price proposition and that is primarily because the company operates on a very thin profit margin. Besides fierce marketing, what establishes Xiaomi as the market leader in India is the fact that it launches a myriad of smartphones at small price increments. Often, different smartphones overlap with each other not only in terms of specifications but also pricing and the company has launched yet another smartphone with a similar philosophy to secure its hold on the Indian market. Xiaomi just announced the Redmi Note 7S with a 48MP primary camera sensor as the only aspect that differentiates it from the Redmi Note 7.
