One of the best things about Android is that if you don’t like the pre-installed software on your phone, you can always flash a custom ROM to spice things up. While LineageOS is the most popular option, there are plenty of amazing custom ROMs out there. One of them is Paranoid Android which was updated to Android 12 in November last year. Since then the Paranoid Android team has released Android 12-based Sapphire Alpha builds to a number of popular smartphones, including the OnePlus 7 Pro, POCO X3, Mi 10T, and more. And the team isn’t stopping there as it’s now bringing Android 12 to a few more phones.

Since Android is built on top of the Linux kernel, Android device makers have to provide, upon customer request, the source code for any Linux kernel binaries that ship on their devices. That includes not only the release date software, but also any subsequent updates to the kernel. The availability of such sources allow the modding community to add new capabilities that are otherwise not offered in the stock configuration. Kernel source releases also help developers to port popular custom ROMs (e.g. LineageOS) for the device which, in turn, benefit users who aren’t satisfied with the stock ROM. OEMs like Xiaomi and Motorola maintain a steady track record of releasing these sources and we now have another example of their commitment towards the aftermarket developer community.

Xiaomi has had an incredible run in the Indian market over the past few years. Certain recent pricing-related controversies aside, the Chinese company has performed very well in the Indian market, managing to clinch the top spot for the eighth consecutive quarter with a 31% market share and 10.3 Million smartphones shipped in Q2 2019. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 series itself has contributed to 5.5 Million sales over five months for Xiaomi. As a mark of celebration, and because the company has reached an equilibrium between demand and supply, Xiaomi has now dropped the flash sales model for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro starting today.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro is one of the best purchases available in the early mid-range in India, offering itself as a great hardware package at an aggressive price point. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has also been hailed by us as the true successor to the legacy of the legendary Redmi Note 3, as it offers one of the most competitive and all-round packages in its segment. The task for Xiaomi is not as easy this year, as competitors are closing the gap on the lead that the Chinese company enjoys, with very high value devices like the Realme 3 Pro.

Xiaomi is known to offer great products at a high price proposition and that is primarily because the company operates on a very thin profit margin. Besides fierce marketing, what establishes Xiaomi as the market leader in India is the fact that it launches a myriad of smartphones at small price increments. Often, different smartphones overlap with each other not only in terms of specifications but also pricing and the company has launched yet another smartphone with a similar philosophy to secure its hold on the Indian market. Xiaomi just announced the Redmi Note 7S with a 48MP primary camera sensor as the only aspect that differentiates it from the Redmi Note 7.

Many-a-times, smartphones with great hardware are flanked with limiting software experience and this primarily why communities like ours thrive. Thanks to the efforts of thousands of independent developers and contributors, users who wish to achieve more with their smartphones can use tailored modification tools like custom ROMs, kernels, etc. To get started with the process of flashing a custom tool, custom recoveries are vital and TWRP is one of the most reputed names in this domain. While TWRP is open-source and we often see unofficial support for a host of smartphones, the developers of the custom recovery have now added official support for three devices – Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, and HTC Desire 12+, opening doors to a range of opportunities for customizations.

Redmi Note 7 Pro offers the best bang for your buck among the budget segment smartphones available in India. One of the most alluring highlights of the smartphone is its 48MP camera, which managed to take some really impressive images during our review. However, there have been some caveats in the Camera app as well with respect to the RAM management on the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Xiaomi India now appears to be making efforts to fix these issues and has released a new update with a score of bug fixes and performance improvements.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro was launched in India in February 2019, bringing over a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC and the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor in a package which had Xiaomi's signature aggressive pricing strategy. Idrees praised the Note 7 Pro in his device review, which concurred along my own initial impressions of the device. The market reception for the phone agreed with us as well, as the Redmi Note 7 series surpassed 1 Million units sold in about a month of being made available in India, despite the 6GB RAM variant not being available for a long period. Xiaomi is definitely putting a lot of weight behind this product, as it also ensured that the phone had its kernel sources released promptly, and that it became a part of the MIUI 10 Beta program as well.

I still remember the first time I used a Xiaomi phone. Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market in July 2014, and I purchased the Xiaomi Redmi 1s in September of that year. The Redmi 1s was Xiaomi's first budget phone to be launched in India, and even at that time, I was impressed by the phone's value proposition. It redefined the $100 smartphone market in India by including specifications that could be found only in phones that cost twice the price. The overall package was hard to beat, and even after taking into consideration the limitations of flash sales, the Redmi 1s went on to become a bestseller.

It hasn't even been a month since the release of Xiaomi's Redmi Note 7 Pro device. The latest device from the smartphone maker, which is intended only for the Chinese and Indian regions, offers a capable package at  an affordable price tag. It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675, 4/6GB RAM, 64/128GB internal storage, and a 48MP camera. This phone, like most Xiaomi products, ships with Xiaomi's custom Android software, MIUI. While it offers a lot of features on top of the Android base, some users still prefer a more Pixel-like look and feel. That's why the release of the kernel source code for devices is important.

However, the company has outlined its plan to restrict the sale of Redmi Note 7 Pro to China and India.

Seeing is believing, and this is not limited to living being with the wealth of vision. Algorithms meant to ape the human mind, including Google's, are getting increasingly better at identifying objects from images. Google Lens, a convenient tool which allows you to search and copy text from images, find products to buy, identify flora and fauna, and perform a variety of other image-based searches, is becoming more and more reliable - even works in real-time. As a result, many manufacturers are integrating Google Lens directly within their camera apps and this feature is extending to a bunch of Xiaomi devices.
