Sony’s on a roll, brings Android 13 to the Xperia 5 IV and three more phones
The company isn't forgetting the phones of yesteryear
With other OEMs already updating their devices to Android 13 left and right, it was high time for Sony to up its games, and that's exactly what it decided to finally do today. After seeding Android 13 to the Xperia 1 IV last month, the Japanese OEM is now bringing the latest flavor of Android to the Xperia 5 IV and the Xperia Pro-I. Additionally, 2021's Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III have also picked up the stable Android 13 update in select regions.
Sony Xperia 1 III will only get two years of Android OS updates
Sony confirmed its new flagship Xperia 1 III will only get two years of Android updates, shorter than Google and Samsung's support periods.
Sony has historically had a difficult time selling phones outside of its home country of Japan, especially in the United States. Most of the company's phones have offered impressive hardware, but Sony's software support has slipped behind much of the competition, and pricing has been an issue for years. The new Xperia 1 III seemed impressive in our initial hands-on coverage, but now Sony has confirmed it won't get the same software support as many other Android flagships.
Sony's pricey Xperia 1 III goes up on pre-order and comes with free wireless earbuds
Sony's latest flagship, the Xperia 1 III, is now available for pre-order in the US starting today, with sales kicking off in August.
Each year, Sony releases a new flagship, gets everyone’s hopes up, even receives a pat on the back from reviewers but it all comes tumbling down when it comes to the sales part. Despite making some solid phones with never-before-seen hardware and doing things its own way and not falling for trends, Sony’s Xperia phones struggle to get traction on the market. Earlier in April, the Japanese electronics giant unveiled the Sony Xperia 1 III, its latest flagship for 2021 which packs a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 chip and some mighty impressive camera hardware. The phone is currently only available in select markets such as Japan and China. But now it's making its way to the US.
