ASUS has yet to release a phone under the Android One program, but they still do care about vanilla Android lovers. The OEM has significantly trimmed down their custom Android skin, ZenUI on their flagship ZenFone 6, while the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and its successor, the ZenFone Max Pro M2, come with near-stock Android. The company also publishes AOSP-based beta builds for existing phones running ZenUI from time to time. ASUS has now released similar AOSP-based Android 10 beta updates to a bunch of entry-level devices from their portfolio, which includes the ZenFone Max M1, the ZenFone Lite and the ZenFone Live (L1/L2).

Last year, ASUS announced the refreshed ZenFone Max series and besides a large battery (attributing to the suffix Max), the series focusses on attributes that put up for a high value proposition. Since it undercut some of Xiaomi's popular products and comes with stock Android, devices like the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2, Max M2, as well as the older Max Pro M1 fared really well in India. However, this popularity now comes under threat with a ruling against ASUS that prohibits it from selling smartphones or accessories in India under the ZenFone branding.

The ASUS PixelMaster Camera application is getting built-in Google Lens integration. Google Lens, for those that don't know, is Google's Artificial Intelligence-powered item identification program. While the Google Pixel phones were the first Android devices to support Lens in the native camera app, it has since come to the Sony Xperia XZ2 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, LG G7 ThinQ, and Moto Z3 Play. More devices can use it too, such as the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, but they have to do it through the Google Assistant app. Google Lens is pretty easy to figure out. Simply open it up, tap an item in the viewfinder, and it will attempt to identify the item. The ASUS PixelMaster camera app comes pre-installed on all ASUS devices, and the updated application is confirmed to be released for the ASUS ZenFone 5.
