One unfortunate side effect of bezel-less smartphone designs is the display notch, which leaves room for the front-facing camera (and face-scanning technology). One solution to this problem is the ZTE Axon 20 5G’s under-screen camera, and although it’s not particularly good, it’s still interesting to see how the technology works.

You've seen notches, you've seen pop-up cameras, but you've never seen under-display cameras until now. The ZTE Axon 20 5G is the brand's latest upper mid-tier phone, and it has one stand-out feature: the camera sits underneath the display, never to be revealed fully to the naked eye. Unfortunately, I don't really think the technology is there just yet. This was the first phone to release with an under-display camera back in September, though it was released exclusively in China at the time.

ZTE has won the race to bring an under-display camera packing phone to the global market, following an initial release in China. The ZTE Axon 20 5G was officially announced today, with a release set just in time for Christmas. It boasts not only an under-display camera but also an under-display fingerprint reader, speaker, and backlighting for what it describes as a “notch-free experience”.

ZTE has been teasing the Axon 20 5G for a few weeks now. It's understandable for the company to heavily push this new device because it's the first commercial smartphone that brings under-display camera technology to consumers. While we already had a fair idea of what to expect from the device, ZTE has finally officially launched the ZTE Axon 20 5G.

[Update 4: More colors] ZTE Axon 20 5G will be the first smartphone with an under-screen camera

In the quest to create a completely bezel-less smartphone, manufacturers have been working on under-screen camera tech for the last couple of years. While we've already seen prototypes from Samsung Display, OPPO, and Xiaomi, the under-screen camera tech is yet to make its way to consumers. But that might change soon. In a recent post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, ZTE's President for Mobile Devices, Ni Fei, has confirmed that the company will be the first to launch a smartphone with an under-screen camera.
