The OnePlus 7 Pro is here, the first of its kind from the now-grown-up OnePlus. It comes packed with powerful new hardware like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, up to 12GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. With great specifications comes an even better display, with the OnePlus 7 Pro marking the company’s first foray into higher refresh rate displays. A pop-up camera is also present so that the 1440p 90Hz display can fill 6.67-inches of AMOLED without being impeded by an unsightly notch. We have everything that you need to know about the OnePlus 7 Pro.

OnePlus 7 Pro Design

The OnePlus 7 Pro is the company’s first entirely bezel-less device, substituting the notch for a pop-up camera. Because of this change, the front of the device greets you with a 6.67-inch Gorilla Glass 5 "Fluid" AMOLED display - the largest of any OnePlus smartphone. Let’s not forget about that 90Hz refresh rate either, it’s going to be hugely noticeable in general usage.

Just like on the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T, it’s entirely coated in glass that OnePlus way back then said was for better network connectivity. OnePlus has fared pretty poorly in the past when it comes to signal reception, so any improvement in this field should be well accepted. The OnePlus 7 Pro is basically a OnePlus 6T looking at the back, though it’s anything but.

Underneath the phone is a single USB-C port and a microphone, along with one of two dual speakers. That’s right, OnePlus has finally included a dual speaker system on a smartphone, though it’s exclusive to the Pro variant only. The earpiece at the top doubles up as a speaker, which is how the company achieves a dual speaker setup despite it not looking like one. The single bottom-firing speaker was also moved to the bottom right of the handset so that users would block it less while gaming.

The back of the device features the same design as the OnePlus 6T, except for three vertically aligned camera sensors instead of two. The dual LED flash remains below the triple camera setup, with the OnePlus logo below that. The “Designed by OnePlus” insignia has been replaced with just “OnePlus” at the bottom. The OnePlus 7 Pro also comes in three colors - Mirror Gray, Almond, and Nebula Blue.

OnePlus 7 Pro Hardware

OnePlus prides themselves on the quality of the hardware in their smartphones, and the OnePlus 7 Pro is no different. Powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, the company claims a 45% performance improvement on top of a 20% battery life improvement over last year’s Snapdragon 845. The Adreno 630 GPU boasts similar statistics, with a 20% performance improvement while also boasting a 30% reduced power draw. “Go Beyond Speed” is the marketing tagline that OnePlus is pushing this time around.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will have three RAM variants, starting at 6GB of RAM and going all the way up to 12GB, it goes from average to overkill real fast. With that, you’ll be able to get up to 256GB of UFS 3.0 dual-lane storage, which is currently only available on the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The storage speed improvements are, theoretically, pretty crazy. There’s no expandable storage here, but that’s to be expected from a OnePlus smartphone.

The battery has also seen multiple improvements. Not only has it been bumped up to 4,000 mAh, but it also supports Warp Charge 30, the charging standard that powered the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition last year. It charges at 30W, a good bit faster than OnePlus’ regular fast charging that charges at “only” 20W. OnePlus also promises the same low temperature charging with Warp Charge 30 as they always have had.

Finally, the in-display fingerprint sensor is here to stay and is faster than the one included on the OnePlus 6T. It also has 38% larger sensor, which should help make it easier to use and more accurate.

OnePlus 7 Pro Camera

The OnePlus 7 Pro marks a departure from the OnePlus of old that includes a dual camera simply because it’s expected. No, the OnePlus 7 Pro has a tri-camera arrangement on the back, with the 48MP Sony IMX 586 the star of the show. It features a custom-made lens with an aperture of f/1.6, OIS, EIS, and a pixel size of up to 1.6 μm. The company has said that they are investing time and resources into their camera, as it’s expected to be up to par in this price range.

Alongside that custom-made 48MP sensor is a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, OIS and EIS and an aperture size of f/2.4. There’s also a 16MP ultra wide 117° camera, a first for a OnePlus smartphone. It has an aperture size of f/2.2 and is useful for squeezing a lot of people or landscape into a single shot.

Great hardware is nothing without software though, which is why OnePlus is debuting the UltraShot Engine with the launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro. It supports HDR+ and Super Resolution, with HDR+ basically being an evolution of HDR. Super Resolution is a lot more interesting, as it extracts the key information from multiple photos and combines them to make the best photograph possible. Nightscape is also much quicker too.

But the rear shooters aren’t the most interesting part of the device. The OnePlus 7 Pro features a 16MP f/2.0 front-facing camera. Don’t worry, it can still be used for face unlock - just like earlier OnePlus smartphones. OnePlus says this motorized camera sensor has been tested 300,000 times. That means that if you used it 150 times a day, you could still theoretically use it for over five years. It will also automatically retract when the device is detected to be falling so that if you drop your phone it doesn’t damage the sensor.

OxygenOS 9.5

The OnePlus 7 Pro launches with the latest version of OxygenOS (version 9.5) based on Android Pie, which has a lot to offer. The addition of Zen Mode is interesting, as it effectively locks down your device for 20 minutes except for the ability to make emergency calls. If you find your smartphone usage a detriment to your health, it could be something worth trying out.

On top of that, a much-requested feature is the addition of a Screen Recording application. It even records internal sound too, so that not only can you commentate while streaming, but users can hear the audio from your device as well.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G

There will be a 5G model of the OnePlus 7 Pro, but there's not a ton of information about it now. OnePlus says it is based on the standard OnePlus 7 Pro and they had to redesign several aspects, such as the NFC antenna, to accommodate the 5G antennae. The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G will be "coming soon" to EE in the UK and Elisa in Finland.

Pricing

The OnePlus 7 will launch in two colors, with two RAM and storage configurations each. The Nebula Blue is the only device to have 12GB of RAM, though that's likely overkill for most phone users regardless.
