Prepare Your Build Machines: Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn Now Official

Today is an important day for any and all Linux enthusiasts. One of the key distributions, Ubuntu, has been updated to version 14.10. Ubuntu is one of the most user-friendly Linux distros. A very simple installer and easy UI make it one of the commonly selected distribution for users abandoning Windows.

With Ubuntu 14.10, only minor changes have been made. The kernel has been updated to 3.16, Xorg to 1.16, Unity to 7.3.1, and LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Rhytmbox and Firefox to their latest revisions. The test release of 14.10 contains a brand new Mir and Unity 8, which will be implemented as default in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. This is expected to be released in April 2016. Ubuntu is a “cutting edge” (not “bleeding edge”) distro, so you shouldn’t expect the newest packages and libraries because they need to be properly tested and certified by Canonical.

Linux is the perfect operating system with which to build Android, so if you are using Ubuntu as an OS on your build machine, don’t hesitate to give the Utopic Unicorn a shot. You can also download one of the spin-offs with different desktop environment like Kubuntu (KDE), Lubuntu (LXDE) or Xubuntu (XFCE) which are Ubuntu based and free of Unity.
