There may be plenty of file explorers already available for Android, but when it comes to applications, there's no such thing as too much choice. Given that people will likely have very different ways of using the same type of app, just one additional or missing feature can be a deal breaker when it comes to settling on a favorite. If you happen to be in the market for a new file explorer, read on.

XDA Forum Member kshark27 has developed Ultra Explorer, a feature packed file manager that's also open source and free. Originally made to meet the developer's own personal needs, he has now decided to share it with everyone else. Packing all the standard feature that you'd expect from any typical file explorer such as root browsing, list and grid views, and zip/unzip functionality, this one also brings a few bells and whistles to the table. Some of the feature you might not have expected include:

  • combined navigation bar and search,
  • gesture bookmarks,
  • built in PDF viewer,
  • built in media viewer with support for formats including mp3,wav,ogg,m4a and more,
  • process manager,
  • app backup manager,
  • duplicate file manager.

Holo themed, ad-free, and open sourced, this is available for the low price of, well, absolutely nothing. What more could you ask for? The application is still in its early stages, but it's definitely one to check out. If you're looking for a new file browser, you can find out more in the application thread.
