Unlimited Original Quality Photo and Video Storage for the Pixel 2 Ends in 3 Years
When Google unveiled last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL as well as this year’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, the company was eager to advertise an unlimited original quality photo and video backup service. This is a service provided by Google Photos but non-Pixel owners had to use their own Google account storage to store those original quality images and videos. What they didn’t properly convey though is how long this offer lasts but now we know it only lasts for about three years.
When Google announced their Google Photos service, millions of people sighed in relief as they finally had a place to upload their photos without needing to worry about storage space. The service offers two different tiers of with everyone getting free ‘high quality’ uploads that are compressed down to 16MP with little loss to no loss to detail. But then there’s the original quality tier that will even let you upload RAW images to the service.
These original quality images would use up the storage for your Google account and then they hope you would pay for additional storage when that limit is reached. This wasn’t the case for Pixel owners as the company advertised free original quality uploads for images and videos that were taken from the Pixel phone. The company didn’t publicly reveal how long this free original quality tier would last for Pixel owners from 1st gen customers did get an answer in the Pixel User Community forum.
According to this top contributor, who says they received this information from a Google employee, this service was only intended to last for the “lifetime of the device.” So at least for original Pixel and Pixel XL owners, Google seems to be content with offering this service until the phone breaks. This will not be the case with the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL though as they have added in a disclaimer that says free original quality photo and video uploads ends at the end of 2020 for US customers and until until Jan. 15, 2021 for Canada and Europe.
