Despite having a significant presence in markets like India and other Southeast Asian regions, China continues to be an important market for Xiaomi and other smartphone OEMs. A bulk of Xiaomi's sales happen in the early price ranges that are usually covered under the Redmi sub-brand. The Chinese OEM attempted something different with the launch of the Redmi K20 Pro, bringing over flagship-level specifications at an affordable price, but making certain decisions that differentiated the product from being a Poco F1 successor. Meanwhile, the definition of a "flagship" has changed slightly thanks to the introduction of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus, which has now prompted Xiaomi to release a new variant of the Redmi K20 Pro. Meet the Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition.
The Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition sees a different back design that gets rid of the gradient and shifting colors and opts for a relatively muted black color and design that gives it a slight "gaming phone" feel without going overboard. The highlight of the device is the upgrade to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, promising up to 15% better GPU performance. The phone sees several RAM and storage configurations, but now you can also get a 12GB and 512GB storage model if your needs demand the same. The device will also ship with MIUI 11 out of the box, likely based on Android 10. Other specifications of the device remain the same as the regular Redmi K20 Pro.
The Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition starts at CNY 2,699 (~$380) for the 8 GB RAM plus 128GB storage configuration. The 8GB RAM plus 512 GB model will be available for CNY 2,999 (~$422); while the 12GB RAM plus 512 GB storage variant will be available for CNY 3,199 (~$450). The phone will be available for purchase starting on September 23 in China. It is currently unknown if the phone will be made available in other regions outside of China, but we wouldn't be surprised to see one of these models make their way to India before the year ends.
