ZTE Quartz gets TWRP, factory images, and kernel source availability
The ZTE Quartz is the first smartwatch running Android Wear 2.0 (now WearOS) by Chinese company ZTE. The device was released in mid-2017 at a price less than $200. Custom development on smartwatches isn’t nearly as popular as it is for smartphones, but that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t happen.
Thanks to the efforts of XDA Recognized Developer and Contributor deadman96385, the ZTE Quartz is also now a part of the OpenWatchProject. Users of this smartwatch can now download a fully functional TWRP and flash it via fastboot. Access to the custom recovery opens the device to new possibilities like obtaining root access and more.
ZTE has also released the kernel source code for the device, so other developers now have a chance to add some enhancements. Last but not least, deadman96385 uploaded pre-release stock ROM images that you can quickly flash onto your smartwatch using fastboot. Instructions on how to unlock the bootloader are provided in the thread.
If you are an owner of the ZTE Quartz, head over to the development thread for more details.
